Parking restriction plan approved for Warminster's Weymouth Street
It's hoped the move will ease congestion on the road
Plans for double yellow lines on Weymouth Street in Warminster have been approved by Wiltshire Council.
It's after the Town Council backed the proposal, on the basis that it would improve safety and reduce congestion.
Members of the public and councillors had raised concerns to the county-wide authority, saying the number of cars parked on the road could cause problems for emergency services.
Cllr Stacie Allensby said: “Due to the amount of parking on either side of the road, Weymouth Street has become difficult to get through narrowing almost to a single lane.
“It is the main access for lorries heading to Morrisons thus making it dangerous for other road users as the larger vehicles struggle to get up and down Weymouth Street.”
Warminster Town Council accepts that the removal of an area where people could park for free won't be welcomed by some, but stressed that, when balanced against the issues of congestion and safety caused by high usage and poor parking, it's the right move to make.
It is also expected that the restrictions will mean access to and from the town centre through Weymouth Street will be improved and make the road easier and safe for everyone.
Wiltshire Council will arrange for a contractor to carry out the work and expect it to be done in approximately two months time.
