Devizes has been named as one of the best places to live in Britain, according to a new survey.

The Wiltshire town ranked highly on a Guardian poll, which looked at a variety of different metrics to make its decisions.

Among these that were considered by the paper included driving times to local amenities and healthcare, as well as broadband speeds and leisure activities in the area.

According to the survey, Devizes had a number of various elements that made it one of the best places to live in Britain, including the plethora of activities "for those who hanker after the mystical, with the Stonehenge and Avebury world heritage sites a short drive away".

The city is "a picture-postcard market town set within the rolling landscape of Wiltshire with an interesting medieval past, 500 listed buildings, a tight-knit community," the paper added.

The outlet went onto praise the town for it "cosiness", adding that the independent economy helps to add to its charm.

While the town also struggles without a train station, the town council is "campaigning" to build one - with the bizarre political makeup of the Council also helping to maintain a sense of calm.

Other places in the South West were also featured on the list, including Penzance in Cornwall and Exeter in Devon.
