As the days get shorter, safety concerns for women running alone become more pronounced.

Emily Griffin, a runner from Chippenham, runs a platform called Legs On Tour, aimed at making it easier for women to find safer running routes.

Inspired by her own experiences of feeling uneasy, which include being chased while running in the dark, Emily founded Legs On Tour in December 2025 after hearing of similar incidents from others.

The platform assesses running routes across the UK for safety, focusing on factors like lighting, footfall, and isolation.

The website and social media pages highlight the safe routes, that have been tried and tested. Starting in Wiltshire, it soon expanded to other nearby cities like Bath and Bristol, and even have routes in places like Barcelona and Berlin. And Emily plans to keep expanding the platform.

She said, ""I go and find running routes within all parts of the UK. The things we are mostly looking out for is how well lit the path is, and if the route does take you through a dodgy park or an alleyway, we will always avoid that."

Emily emphasises the importance of making running more accessible, reducing the worries associated with it for women.

She added, "I really see the importance of being able to help other people go out for a run and feel slightly safer.

For many women who work a traditional nine-to-five schedule, running in the dark remains a necessity to keep up with their training and maintain their mental health as nights grow longer.
