Chippenham man sentenced after admitting giving false name to officers

A 25-year-old man from Chippenham has been sentenced after admitting lying about his identity to officers when he was stopped for driving offences.
Aaron Chilcott, from Wood Lane, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on Friday (26 June) and was given a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
He has also been banned from driving for four months - for acts intending to pervert the course of justice.
Chilcott must also carry out a 10-day rehabilitation requirement, pay £150 in court costs, a victim surcharge of £187 and £500 in compensation to the person whose name he falsely gave.
The court heard how Chilcott had been stopped by officers in Bath Road, Chippenham, on 21 September 2023.
His car was seized due to having no insurance, no MOT, tyres below the minimum tread and driving not in accordance with his provisional licence.
He gave officers a false name and address, and was later arrested on 15th July 2025 in Trowbridge.
Roads Policing Officer James Salmond said: “Chilcott has been sentenced for providing false details to officers - this resulted in an innocent person being wrongly initially implicated in Chilcott’s driving offences.
“Knowingly providing incorrect details to a police officer is a serious matter which can have serious implications.”
