Budget supermarket chain Aldi has applied for planning permission to make major changes to its store at Methuen Park, Chippenham.

The firm – the UK’s fourth-largest grocer – wants to mount 268 panels on the roof of the store, which was granted planning permission in 2020.

The store formed part of the regeneration of Langley Park.

The company hopes to generate up to 140 kilowatts of electricity at any one time from the scheme.

Aldi is rolling out solar panels to all of its UK stores in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint.

The company says there would be little visual impact from the panels, as they cannot be viewed from the ground and the store is not overlooked by nearby houses.

The company does not say how much of its energy requirements would be met by the solar scheme, but given the size of the store it is likely to provide around half the electricity it needs.

A decision from Wiltshire Council is expected by mid-May.
