Changes to Council Tax support for working-age people in Wiltshire are being proposed.

The Council wants to make it easier for people receiving Universal Credit through the Council Tax Reduction Scheme to access support.

The current provision means help can change on a monthly basis.

The proposal would be active from April next year and would only require updates when a significant change occurs, including moving house, changing job, a change in income or someone moving in or out of the household.

Cabinet Member for Finance, Cllr Gavin Grant, told us that the Council receives thousands of updates about support changes, but these are often small amounts of a few pence.

But the time and cost of recalculating support and communicating that to an individual is high, as is the stress and worry it causes to people.

He said: "That notification creates a degree of worry as to what's happening. So we're changing it.

"What we're going to do is only notify people where there are really big changes going on in their lives rather than trivial ones. That means we're saving officer time. We're saving money on administration and on the costs of notification and postage, and we're not disrupting people's lives for no good reason."

The changes will not apply to anyone receiving a pension.

A survey has been set up on the Council website to find out if people support the proposal, which runs until 31st October.
