Bonnymead play area reopens after £500k makeover
The play area had been long overdue an upgrade
An Amesbury play park has reopened after a makeover worth half a million pounds.
Bonnymead Play Park, on the banks of the River Avon, had been overdue an upgrade and was prioritised by the Town Council in 2025 for refurbishment.
Following a procurement process and using funds from its own reserves, the council has helped deliver a new, fresh, site for children of Amesbury to play in.
It features seven zones for youngsters to explore: Junior Zone, Sensory Zone, Swing Zone, Teen Zone, Ninja Zone and Copper Tree Kingdom.
It was reopened by Mayor of Amesbury, Cllr Laura Knight.
Mayor Knight, said: "Seeing Bonnymead transformed is incredibly rewarding. The new zones, the accessible features and the thoughtful design reflect the community’s feedback and the Council’s commitment to wellbeing and inclusion. We are genuinely excited to open this space and proud to offer a play environment that will support local families for many years to come."
It was designed by Proludic and after amendments to see more accessible equipment added, contractors began work in April.
The old exercise equipment has been recycled and moved to Lord's Walk, while old fencing and gates will be repurposed. Old benches and tables have been re-sited and offered to local groups in the community.
Mayor Knight added: "Bonnymead Play Park’s refurbishment represents a major step forward in how we design inclusive public spaces in Amesbury. Our recent accessibility audit was central to this work. It gave us a clearer understanding of the barriers families were facing and directly shaped the choices we made, ensuring the new layout and equipment support children with a wide range of needs.
The audit has also become a foundation for how we will approach all future play provision, helping us create spaces that are welcoming, usable and enjoyable for everyone."
