Plans are being made for how to spend a £1million grant for new cycling and walking routes in Wiltshire.

The grant from the Government aims to encourage more active travel in the county.

Cabinet Member for Transport, Cllr Tamara Reay, told Greatest Hits Radio that they're committed to helping people living in Wiltshire make more journeys by foot and bike, while improving access for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs.

"We do have some plans across the county for market towns and a whole county plan," she said.

Cllr Reay added: "We will be looking at those to look at the some of the next opportunities which will get the best bang for our buck when we spend this money."

The council will looking at where evidence suggests people will choose to change their journey from cars to active travel to guide their plans.

It's hoped that this will reduce cars on roads, improve our physical and mental wellbeing and be a boost for the environment.

However, Cllr Reay admits it's unrealistic to expect every journey to include active travel.

She did tell us that active travel will work in tandem with improvements to public transport connections, including bus and rail.

"Its all about the end to end of travel," she said.

Cllr Reay continued: "You might hear people talk about the first mile and the last mile, particularly in when it comes to rail and bus, but they still need to get to the bus stop or get to the station and then get to their final destination at the end. So the first mile and the last mile is really important."
