Plans to boost safety on A361 at Caen Hill in Devizes
It's hoped work can start early next year
Plans to improve road safety on a road in Devizes are nearing completion, Wiltshire Council say.
Wiltshire Council is using part of it's £22m investment in the county's highways to boost safety on the A361 Caen Hill in Devizes.
Designs are said to be at an 'advanced' stage and will see a number of improvements made for the benefit of all people using the road.
The project's main focus is the installation of traffic lights at the staggered junction of the B3101 B3101 Marsh Lane (towards Rowde) and Poulshot Road. These lights will be controlled by sensors which will allow traffic on the A361 to flow freely when no other vehicles are at the junctions.
Other crucial improvements include:
• The installation of safety barriers along the centre of the dual carriageway.
• Enhancements to the area’s electricity cabling and street lighting for better visibility and reliability.
• Improvements to drainage infrastructure to alleviate issues with standing water on the road and reduce flooding risks.
• Improved pedestrian crossing facilities and access to bus stops.
• Full resurfacing of the road once all the other work is completed.
Cllr Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We are committed to improving road safety throughout Wiltshire as part of our Business Plan, and this significant project would not be possible without our additional £22m investment into the county’s roads.
“While other councils around the country are cutting budgets, we are investing into improving our highways and making them safer for all road users.
“This is a comprehensive improvement scheme – traffic lights to make the junctions safer, and we’re also looking to solve drainage issues on the A361 and improve the electrical supply, as well as making it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the road.
“Work is expected to begin on this project early in 2026, and the reason for this is that it will take some time to complete the detailed design and also there are several resurfacing projects coming up in Devizes in the coming year and we want to minimise disruption in the area as much as we can.
“We’ll share more details on this project as the plans develop.”
