Plans lodged to build 365 new homes in Westbury
The developer has pledged to give 30% of them to local housing association
Plans have been lodged for up to 365 new houses on land between Westbury and Dilton Marsh.
Persimmon Homes Wessex wants to build the houses on land off Mane Way, west of Westbury.
The 54-acre parcel of land, around a kilometre from the town centre, is bounded by railway lines to the north and west, Biss Brook river to the west, Mane Way to east. The 17th-century Penleigh House and estate sits to the west of the site.
The site has been allocated for housing as part of the Wiltshire Local Plan review and the application follows engagement with Wiltshire Council and Westbury Town Council, including a public consultation in January and a presentation to the town council.
The proposed homes would be built in three distinct areas, with one at the north east of the site near the railway line, a second in the centre of the site, north of Penleigh Road, and a third – the largest – south of Penleigh Road and the lakes that would be created to provide a sustainable drainage solution and improve biodiversity.
Penleigh Road would be designated as a ‘rural green corridor,’ while existing public footpaths would be retained or rerouted.
More than 50 per cent of the overall site is reserved as public open space, with improved public access to the rare moated ancient monument that lies within the site boundary.
The developer has pledged that 30 per cent of the homes will be transferred to a local housing association to help alleviate housing need in the area.
