The stage is set for sporting history as the Women's Rugby World Cup kicks off this week, with hopes high that the Red Roses can follow in the footsteps of the Lionesses and claim the ultimate prize.

Great Western Railway today are saying how fans heading to the South West for the action will find excellent rail connections to both tournament venues within the region.

Matches will take place at two premier stadiums: Sandy Park in Exeter and Bristol's Ashton Gate – both perfectly positioned for train travel.

First Match: France v Italy

For the South West, the tournament launches with a blockbuster clash between France and Italy at Sandy Park, kicking off at 2015 on Saturday 23 August.

Your Rail Routes to the Action:

  • Sandy Park, Exeter: Served by Digby & Sowton or Newcourt stations
  • Ashton Gate, Bristol: Served by Parson Street station

For the opening match, half-hourly services will run from Exeter St Davids to Digby & Sowton, and from Exmouth to Newcourt, ensuring fans can reach the ground with ease.

Travel Smart: With thousands of supporters expected, stations will be really busy immediately before and after matches. GWR, who operate the train service, recommends allowing extra time for your journey and checking live travel updates before departure – particularly if you're travelling from further afield.

Those travelling from afar are also warned that CrossCountry trains will run a reduced timetable over this weekend (23/24 and 25 August) due to industrial action, and South Western Railway has also made changes to their timetable because of speed restrictions on the route towards Exeter. Allow plenty of time for your journey and check before setting out.
