Truro City defender Ben Adelsbury has announced his retirement from football at the age of 35, deciding to leave the sport to spend more time with his family.

Adelsbury will mark his final appearance for Truro during their game against Yeovil Town on 11th October 2023.

During his third spell with the Cornish club, Adelsbury played a significant role in their recent rise from the Southern Premier League to the National League, securing consecutive promotions and contributing both on and off the pitch.

Reflecting on his career, the Cumbria-born, South West-raised player spoke about his proudest moments, including Truro's play-off victory over Bracknell Town in May 2023 and winning the National League South title just months later.

“I arrived as a player and leave as a fan," Adelsbury told the club's website. "It is amazing to see where the club was two or three years ago to where it finds itself now.”

Adelsbury also revealed that the decision to retire was made earlier due to his commitments outside football, noting the club's transition to full-time status this season impacted his ability to continue playing.

With 70 fans attending games during his return under manager Paul Wotton and Truro ground-sharing with Plymouth Parkway, Adelsbury praised the unity within the club’s ranks during tough times, culminating in memorable promotion celebrations.

As he steps away from professional football, Adelsbury looks forward to following his son Theo’s journey, who has recently joined Torquay United’s academy.

“I have told my wife not to sign me up for B&Q at 3:00pm on a Saturday because I will be getting my football fix somewhere,” he jokingly remarked.

Everyone at Truro City has extended gratitude to Adelsbury for his contributions, stating he will always be welcome back at the club.
