A fire at Paignton station led to the temporary suspension of train services yesterday - as safety inspections are conducted to assess the damage.
Joint Network Operations Director for Great Western Railway and Network Rail Great Western Route, Daryn McCombe, highlighted the importance of the station to the community and expressed a commitment to restoring services swiftly.
McCombe thanked the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service for their rapid response to extinguish the fire.
“Paignton station is much more than a transport hub, it is a familiar landmark at the heart of the town, and we understand that many people will be affected by the scenes this morning," McCombe said.
“We are grateful to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service for their swift response. The fire has been extinguished, but specialist teams still need to carry out detailed inspections of the station building and surrounding railway infrastructure before trains can return.”
Safety First
Safety assessments must be completed before the resumption of train services.
McCombe stressed that safety is the top priority, specifying that plans are in place to begin operating trains between Newton Abbot and Torquay for customers needing to travel from today (22/07).
He added that a limited road replacement service is available today between Newton Abbot and Paignton.
“We will provide further updates as soon as the damage assessment is complete and we have a clearer picture of next steps," he said.
