Devon's independent bookshops are being celebrated today
An event is taking place on Exeter Quay
Exeter's Book Market takes place at the quay for the first time today celebrating independent bookshops from across Devon.
Anna Cohn Orchard, the executive director of the UNESCO backed 'Exeter City of Literature' group, says the event started out as a way of helping independent book shops six years ago - and has grown.
"We’re so excited to have The Book Market on the Quay for the first time," she said.
"To be able to see this buzzy, beautiful space alive with booksellers, readers, writers, and visitors is going to be a highlight of the summer and the perfect way to celebrate Exeter as a UNESCO City of Literature.”
Dominic Myers, General Manager at The Bookery in Crediton says, “We attended the Book Market last June for the first time in several years and were so impressed by the excellent organisation, the passion for books, and the wonderful conversations with readers.
"The energy on the day reminded us why events like this matter so much. We’re genuinely excited to be returning this year and to be part of such a vibrant celebration of Devon’s independent bookshops.”
Since its inception in 2021, the Book Market has become a staple in the city’s cultural calendar, uniting independent bookshops from across Devon to create a one-day book-filled haven in Exeter. The event continues to grow in popularity each year as more and more visitors flock to Exeter every June to immerse themselves in a world of stories, creativity, and community spirit.
For the first time, The Book Market is taking place on Exeter Quay across three distinct areas that feature 13 independent bookshops from across Devon, an exciting array of free activities, and 4 engaging author talks featuring local talent and writers from across the global UNESCO Cities of Literature network.
