Firefighters work to contain landfill blaze near Didcot

Fire crews have worked overnight to bring a fire at a landfill site near Didcot under control.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue was called out at 17:43 on the 9th August to the incident at Appleford Sidings, in Sutton Courtenay,

The fire service say the blaze involved non-hazardous processed landfill and waste materials at the Greenways Landfill site.

Initially eight crews responded to the fire and firefighting units included a high-volume pump, 4x4 vehicles, a water carrier from Wheatley, and a multi-terrain water carrier from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue.

Although the blaze has been subdued, fire and rescue personnel have remained at the scene overnight and are continuing their work into Monday.

They are collaborating with site operatives and managers to resolve the incident and eventually transfer control back to them.

The fire's cause is not believed to be suspicious, but further investigations are planned in the days ahead.

Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber expressed gratitude to the firefighters, saying: "Huge thanks as always to our incredible fire fighters tackling the blaze at the Sutton Courtenay landfill site."
