Streetlamps could be turned off at night across areas in Oxfordshire but only where it is 'safe' to do so.

A new policy has been approved by Oxfordshire County Council, which will allow communities the choice to turn them off in their neighbourhoods.

It's in a bid to save money, reduce carbon emissions and improve biodiversity.

Parish or town council's and ward county councillors will be able to request to turn off streetlights from 11.30pm to 5.30am in rural locations, and from midnight to 5.30am in urban areas.

The leader of Oxfordshire county council, Cllr Liz Leffman, says not everywhere will be eligible, "most of our parishes and smaller towns and villages would be eligible, but there are restrictions in things like alleyways and routes in town where there is a night-time economy.

"Most of the city centre and in some urban areas like Banbury and Bicester, will not be allowed to have their lights turned off as there are people who work late at night, or come home late in the evening from going out and want to feel safe.

"Some people are very keen to have dark skies because it helps to nurture biodiversity and improve nature recovery.

"I also know many people in villages would like to have dark skies so they can see the stars."

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson said each case will be reviewed by Thames Valley Police to ensure people's safety isn't compromised.
