A strategic outline case has identified strong potential for the development of a new railway station serving the Wantage and Grove area, aiming to boost connectivity and economic benefits.

Commissioned by Oxfordshire County Council, the study by SLC Rail suggests the station could attract around 1,400 passengers daily.

Economic benefits are anticipated depending on the proposed station's location and the services offered.

Councillor Gareth Epps emphasised the importance of rail investment in Wantage and Grove as part of Oxfordshire's transport and connectivity goals, highlighting its strategic location near the Science Vale area.

Challenges identified in the report include train service provision, complex infrastructure, and the impact of Thames Water's proposed reservoir nearby.

Infrastructure concerns from Network Rail regarding congestion on the Swindon-Didcot section of the Great Western Main Line add to the complexity.

The council is engaging with Thames Water to ensure their reservoir plans do not impede the new station and to explore potential infrastructure opportunities.

Work with the rail industry will assess wider capacity and operational issues on the Great Western Main Line, expected to be completed by spring 2027, informing the council's decision on the next business case stage.

Andy Holding from the Wantage & Grove Station Supporters Group highlighted the economic advantages and potential congestion reduction the station could offer.

Proposals for Wantage & Grove station were included in Oxfordshire County Council’s OxRail 2040: Plan for Rail, adopted last November.

Oxfordshire County Council is committed to working with Network Rail, Great Western Railways, and local councils to progress the station plans.
