Oxfordshire County Council says it will correct new road signs for the £5 congestion charge after a spelling error has been spotted.

The signs which have been installed across Oxford to warn motorists about the new fee, told drivers they could pay “on line” instead of “online.”

They put up ahead of the scheme’s launch earlier this week, as drivers without a permit are now being charged for passing through six locations in the city.

The council said the mistake was the result of a supplier error and “would be fixed in the coming days”.

It confirmed there would be no cost to taxpayers for replacing the affected signs.

This is not the first time that the new signage has drawn criticism, as some residents and local politicians had also complained that several signs were partially obscured by overgrown bushes.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Oxfordshire County Council said: “The spelling error will be amended in coming days. This was a supplier error so there is no cost to the council.”

The County Council introduced the congestion charge in a bid to reduce traffic while Botley Road remains closed and is preventing the start of the traffic filter trial.

It also says the temporary scheme helps “contribute towards creating a healthier, more accessible and attractive city”.
