Cherwell District Council is investigating a significant fly-tip found in Ash Wood, located between Bletchingdon and Weston-on-the-Green, north of Kidlington - and some rare, vintage floral wall tiles could be a clue as to who's behind it.

The waste, which also includes flooring, Eurohome-branded fixtures and wallpaper was discovered on 11th January. Council investigations suggest the fly-tip occurred during the week commencing 5th January.

Councillor Rob Parkinson, Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities, said:

“It is shocking to see this cynical act of fly-tipping tarnishing a local woodland. We are determined to bring the offenders to justice.

“This is a serious fly-tip with enough waste to fill a transit van. We would like to hear from anyone who saw, or captured dashcam footage of, suspicious vehicle movements in the area at the start of January.

“All the evidence points to the crime having been committed by a rogue contractor working on a property renovation. It could be that a homeowner has entrusted the waste to their builder in good faith, but this goes to show the importance of only using licensed waste handlers on these sorts of renovation projects.

“We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who recognises what are some very distinctive, floral-patterned wall tiles, discovered at the scene.”

The council is urging residents to ensure they only use licensed waste handlers to dispose of rubbish. People can check if a waste handler is licensed by searching the public register of waste carriers on the Environment Agency website.

Illegal waste disposal is an offence that can result in fixed penalty notices or prosecution in a magistrates’ or crown court.

Anyone with information about the fly-tip or another case of illegal waste disposal in the district can contact Cherwell District Council on 01295 227007.
