Oxford United has confirmed the death of former director Desmond Morris, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, 19 April, at the age of 98 following a short illness.

Morris, widely known as “Doc,” was an internationally recognised author and zoologist whose 1967 book The Naked Ape became a global bestseller, selling more than 20 million copies.

He maintained a long-standing connection with Oxford United, serving the club in multiple roles including director, vice chairman, and vice president. He was also a regular supporter and season ticket holder.

His most visible contribution came in 1978 when he designed the club’s ox-head crest, inspired by a Minoan bull. The emblem has remained central to Oxford United’s identity for nearly five decades.

Morris also examined football culture in his later work The Soccer Tribe, drawing in part on his observations of Oxford United supporters.

He continued to follow Oxford United closely and watched their recent victory over Watford just a week before he died.

Oxford United say their thoughts are with Morris’s family and friends.
