Oxford United to honour Joey Beauchamp at FA Cup match against Sunderland
Club to pay tribute to a beloved figure during the fourth round tie
Oxford United will pay tribute to Joey Beauchamp during the Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round home tie against Sunderland today, marking four years since his passing.
Joey Beauchamp represented the club across two spells spanning more than three decades.
The former winger made 428 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 80 goals.
He sadly took his own life in February 2022.
Oxford United said Joey was known for his moments of brilliance, unforgettable goals, and a style of play that embodied flair, commitment, and passion for the badge.
Beyond his contributions on the pitch, they said he was a father, brother, teammate, and friend who left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
This commemorative match offers an opportunity to reflect on Joey’s contribution to Oxford United and recognise the legacy that continues through the Joey Beauchamp Foundation, a charity aiming to improve mental health support in Oxfordshire.
On the 11th minute, in recognition of the number synonymous with Joey Beauchamp, supporters are invited to join a minute’s applause in his honour.
A tribute video will also be shown on the stadium’s big screen prior to the match.
Joey’s family will be in attendance, with several initiatives taking place throughout the afternoon.
Speaking about mental health, Oxford United manager Matt Bloomfield said: "It’s so terribly sad when when when it gets to that point in somebody’s life. It’s affected my life and I know one or two of our players have been affected.
"My heart goes out to the family and for us as a football club to remember him is the right thing to do because he was such an incredible player and such a big name of our past."
The charity Oxford United in the Community is also running a prize draw, with all profits donated to the Joey Beauchamp Foundation.
