Hundreds of young people will gather at the University of Oxford to have their say about the future of the Scouts Movement.

The landmark youth forum, at the Examinations School, is one of the first events of its kind. It will help the largest youth organisation in the country to create its next decade of sustainable growth.

“They’re the ones who understand exactly why Scouting is so important”

They are organised by the Scouts UK Youth Team, a group of volunteers aged 18 to 25, dedicated to representing young people’s voices.

Ayesha Karim, UK Youth Lead, said: “Events like this give me a huge sense of pride to be part of Scouting. I’ve spoken to hundreds of young people about why they enjoy being part of Scouts. They clearly have gained so many incredible skills through their time but also are so willing to talk about it and want to share it so passionately.

“It makes you really remember why we volunteer our time in the way that we do. It makes you remember why it’s important that we’re giving these opportunities to young people, because they honestly feel so empowered.”

The day forum event in Oxford will include workshops about the role of youth voice in the Movement’s strategy.

Some will specifically explore topics like advocacy, equity, diversity and inclusion, safety and safeguarding, sustainability and digital. Young people will also consider what the world – and Scouts – will look like in 2035.

Ayesha added: “If we don’t continue to talk to our young people directly, we’re not going to remain relevant as an organisation. They’re the ones who understand exactly why Scouting is so important and what it has to offer.”

Dwayne Fields, the recently appointed Chief Scout, said: “It’s important that the future plans of the Scouts are informed by young people, so that’s why it’s essential that young people are able to contribute to the future of the Scout Movement in the next ten years by having their say on our future plans.”
