Ferry Leisure Centre in Oxford is celebrating the achievements of its scheme that provides free access to facilities for individuals experiencing homelessness.
With support from Oxford City Council and Leisure Solutions Community Trust, the initiative offers 30 individuals a six-month free membership, granting them unlimited access to the gym, fitness classes, and other facilities without the need for a formal address.
The Leisure Community Fund finances this programme, supporting priority groups with lower activity levels highlighted by the local authorities.
Participants were identified by Oxford City Council’s localities team during outreach and engagement efforts.
Feedback from participants reveals the positive impact of this initiative.
Some shared how access to the gym has helped them become more active, and others described the emotional benefits, such as reduced isolation, established routines, and increased confidence.
One participant attributed their attendance at the gym to gaining the confidence to apply for, and secure, a part-time job.
Councillor Mark Lygo said, "This partnership with Serco Leisure not only helps people stay active and healthy, which is vital for us all, but it also helps them feel part of their local community."
Adam Godwin, Active Communities Manager for Leisure Solutions Community Trust, which operates the centre in partnership with Serco Leisure, highlighted inspiring feedback from participants, including parents enjoying activities with their children and individuals feeling stronger and more confident.
Godwin expressed gratitude for the funding provided by Active Communities and Oxford City Council, underscoring how leisure centres serve as community hubs where everyone is welcomed and empowered.
