An Oxford family support charity is highlighting the struggles for new fathers, as it plans to expand its services.

With Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week often focusing on the challenges faced by new mums, Home-Start Oxford says the pressures of having a baby should be recognised for both parents.

“It’s important that dads know that they’re not just a side conversation,” said CEO Katherine Barber.

“Post-natal depression for fathers is also a thing and reaching out for help with that or any other factors you might be struggling with is really valid," she added.

Ms Barber explained that a range of factors can affect the wellbeing of both new mums and dads.

“It puts pressure on your finances and your relationships," she said. "It can bring existing mental health challenges to the surface now with that extra stress of having a baby."

The charity supports families with young children through one-to-one home visits with trained volunteers and community groups across the county.

Ms Barber said this can help many new parents with feelings of isolation during early parenthood.

“Lots of parents tell us that they feel cut off from their support networks,” she said. “They want that village around them to help raise their children, but that can be hard to create.”

Home-Start Oxford is now hoping to launch a service specifically aimed at fathers in early 2027.

She is also encouraging any parents struggling with their mental health to seek support through their GP, midwife, health visitor or charities.

“It’s a brave step to reach out for help but when you do, the support is absolutely there for you,” she said.
