Oxford caterer makes over 250,000 meals for homeless people
Lorraine Green has been feeding homeless and vulnerable people for over two decades
A caterer at Oxford homeless charity The Porch says she has made over a quarter of a million meals for people who may otherwise go hungry
Lorraine Green has dedicated 22 years to providing nutritious food for those in need, aiming to brighten their days and support their health.
She focuses on creating balanced meals with plenty of vitamins and minerals, noting that many of the people she helps would usually rely on low-cost foods.
"A lot of people that live on their own, are homeless or vulnerable, tend to eat toast, beans on toast, packets of crisps, something like that. But if they come to The Porch, they know that they're going to get a really really delicious, nutritious meal," Lorraine said.
Beyond the nutritional element, Lorraine believes the meals she serves at The Porch offer a sense of humanity to those who walk through the doors, giving them experiences such as trying new foods, which many take for granted.
"It's lovely when you say to somebody, 'Just try it.' They say, 'Oh, I've never tasted that,' and I say, 'Just try it, you might actually like it,'" she said.
Lorraine shared that her commitment comes from feeling fortunate and wanting to give back to those who are struggling due to problems many cannot imagine.
She explained that a lot of people in these situations have experienced mental health issues, family struggles, addiction, or have come to the UK from other countries seeking refuge.
“When we haven’t got the problems people have when they come into The Porch, we should feel very blessed and privileged,” Lorraine said. “It’s really difficult for them to feel that they belong, that there’s a place of sanctuary where they can come and feel normal.”
Reflecting on her time catering, Lorraine expressed warmth and gratitude for her years of service to the organisation.
"I've loved every minute of my time at The Porch. For me, it's it's not a job, it's something that I just love to do naturally," Lorraine said.
She added: "It's really important for me to make sure that people are getting the nutrition that they need.
"That's my way to give back."
Lorraine continues her work at The Porch, contributing her skills and compassion to support those who need it most.
