Oxford’s New Theatre set for art deco revamp after revised plans shared
Historic building on George Street to get new lease of life
Revised plans for a revamp of Oxford’s New Theatre aim to restore its art deco charm and address the "haphazard" presentation of the historic building.
Earlier this year, initial proposals to enhance the theatre were submitted to the city council, which have now been amended to address feedback received in consultation.
The revamped proposal includes extending the theatre’s canopy over George Street and into Victoria Court, refurbishing original stained glass windows, as well as installing new signage and lighting.
According to the plans, "The theatre presents a handsome facade to George Street and is a recognised landmark."
However, the propositions acknowledge that years of incremental additions, such as banners and advertising supports, have compromised the exterior’s integrity.
The proposed revamp aims to replace temporary adaptations with a permanent, heritage-led architectural solution.
This involves preserving the historic fabric while modernising the theatre’s external identity to reveal "the building’s 1930s elegance for the first time in decades."
A new exterior sign has been designed, inspired by the theatre’s original 1934 Art Deco souvenir programme.
If the plans are approved, redundant hanging signs will be removed to streamline the building's appearance.
The New Theatre, which was completed in 1933, looks to embark on a transformation that honours its original design intentions while serving modern needs.
