Investigations underway following serious sexual assault in Banbury

There's an appeal for witnesses

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses to a rape in Banbury.

Between 3.25am and 3.50am on Saturday February 1st, officers say an offender followed a woman in her late teens into an alleyway in Newlands Place in the town and raped her.

The victim, sustained minor injuries and attended hospital.

Shortly before the rape, the same offender also approached three women on Broad Street and attempted to hug them.

A 26-year-old man from Kettering has been arrested on suspicion of rape, prior to being held in police custody.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector James Holden-White, of Banbury CID, said:

“I understand that this may cause concern but I want to reassure the community that this was an isolated incident.

“An arrest has been made but I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the moments leading up to this incident or has any information that can assist our investigation.

“I am also appealing to the group of women who were approached by the offender on the same night as they may have vital information."
