A former police officer from Oxfordshire has pleaded guilty to abusing his police powers and privileges.

50 year old Ian Dring was charged with one count of corrupt and improper exercise of police authority

He was involved in a romantic relationship with a victim in a case he was investigating in Abingdon.

Dring has been sentenced to 11 months of imprisonment, suspended for two years, with additional penalties including 100 hours of unpaid work, a Mental Health Requirement, 10 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and a £1,000 cost order.

He was arrested in May 2023 and charged on 30th August 2024 after an extensive investigation.

Dring was stationed in the South and Vale area and was suspended from duty before being dismissed following an Accelerated Misconduct Hearing on 14th July last year.

The hearing was conducted privately to ensure the criminal proceedings were not compromised.

The head of Thames Valley Police’s Professional Standards department, Detective Chief Superintendent Ailsa Kent, addressed the outcome:

“This case demonstrates that the force will act swiftly to investigate and dismiss any officers who commit criminal offences.

“There is no place in policing for former officers such as Ian Dring and we welcome his conviction.”
