Thames Valley Police say they are very disappointed over an increase in drink and drive offences from people who'd attended Henley Royal Regatta this year.

But they say overall there was a reduction in general crime and say it was a successful policing operation.

Disappointing

Chief Inspector Matthew Sulley, tactical commander for the policing operation, said:

“There was, unfortunately, an increase in the number of drink driving offences, which is very disappointing, based on the severe harm that this can cause to individuals and families.

“However, despite this disappointing aspect, when you consider the very large number of people who came to Henley during the regatta week, this represents a very small minority of people, and I am pleased that we have kept crime very low.

“Working in partnership with security teams from Henley Royal Regatta, licenced premises and the local authorities enabled us to ensure the safety of all those who visited the regatta during the day and the town in the evening.

“Over the course of the event, we saw a 9.5% reduction in crime when compared to last year’s event, with 19 crimes recorded in total for a variety of offences including driving offences and public order.

“Over the course of the six days, we made 15 arrests in total."
