Council tax is going up by just under 5%, meaning people living in a Band D home will pay just over £2,000 a year, as the county council’s approved its new budget.

Hundreds of millions of pounds will be spent on services and there’s also extra money set aside for adult social care and children’s services.

The council has been able to deal with a budget shortfall of £5.4m while still investing extra in adult social care (£14m), children’s services (£19m), highways, libraries and other services.

However, the authority already knows that it will need to find further savings of at least £15.5m from 2027/28.

The government will cut grant funding by £27.2m by 2028/29 and assumed the council will make up most of the difference with maximum council tax rises.
