Rumours a congestion charge could be introduced in Witney have been shut down by the district council.

West Oxfordshire District Council released a statement on social media today, stating they had seen “incorrect information” being shared about a congestion charge being introduced in the town.

It comes after a congestion charge was introduced on six roads in Oxford in October.

The council’s statement said: “To be clear – there is no proposed congestion charge for Witney and there are no plans for one to be introduced.

“Any suggestion that a congestion charge is being considered for Witney is misleading and risks causing unnecessary concern.

“We would rather focus on the positives of our amazing town – its fantastic community spirit, great town centre and rich history.

“We want to build on this foundation and look to how we improve our area in the future.

“We are proud to support Witney town centre by maintaining free car parking and free access, helping residents, businesses and visitors.

“We have also invested in Marriotts Walk, bringing a fantastic new market, filling vacant shops and helping to boost the town centre.”

In a meeting earlier this month, Conservative councillor Liam Walker asked the leader of the council, Andy Graham, if Witney would get a congestion charge.

Mr Graham responded that the council is “not aware of any plans to introduce a congestion charge in towns like Witney”.

Oxfordshire County Council is responsible for transport measures, not West Oxfordshire District Council.

Oxford’s congestion charge is an interim measure until Botley Road reopens in August 2026, and will be replaced by the traffic filter trial.
