Three men have been sentenced in connection with a violent domestic-related incident in Drayton, Oxfordshire.

Brothers Andrew Smith, 30, Michael Smith, 28, and Joseph Smith, 26, all of Islington, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, were convicted of causing criminal damage and jailed at Oxford Crown Court today (22 January).

Michael Smith was also sentenced for a count of dangerous driving at the same hearing.

Michael Smith was jailed for 18 months, with Andrew Smith sentenced to 14 months in prison and Joseph Smith ten months in prison.

On 3 July last year, the trio travelled by car from Trowbridge to Drayton, taking items including a sledgehammer with the plan to cause criminal damage to the house and cars of their grandfather.

They then fled the scene back towards Trowbridge when Wiltshire Police stopped the vehicle.

The victim, a man aged in his seventies, sustained injuries while trying to protect his property and family during the incident.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Rachel Brough said: “This was a violent domestic-related incident whereby the defendants came together with one purpose, which was to cause as much damage as possible.

“With combined working of Wiltshire Police, who made the initial arrests, and the Priority Crime Team in Abingdon, all three were arrested and have now been sentenced for these offences.

“The level of violence used against the victim was totally unacceptable, and he has now been safeguarded, and I hope that these sentences will go some way to bring about a sense of justice for him.

“We will never tolerate such behaviour and will work tirelessly to bring those to justice, working in partnership with other forces where necessary.”
