Paratrooper killed by explosion during military test in Ukraine, coroner rules
Lance Corporal George Hooley died last December while observing Ukrainian troops
The death of a British paratrooper serving in Ukraine, has been ruled by a coroner to have resulted from an explosion during a military test.
28 year old L/Cpl George Hooley died on 9th December last year after an incident the Ministry of Defence described as a “tragic accident” while working as part of a limited deployment of British Armed Forces personnel supporting Ukrainian troops.
Senior coroner for Oxfordshire, Darren Salter, conducted the inquest, revealing that Hooley sustained multiple injuries from an explosion while observing a test of a new defensive capability.
Although the location of the incident was away from the front line, limited evidence was provided regarding the circumstances of the explosion, according to the coroner.
Known for his professionalism and dedication to the Parachute Regiment, tributes were given posthumously, recognising the exceptional character and skills L/Cpl Hooley brought to his role.
The inquest was conducted privately at the request of Hooley's family, with the coroner stating there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
Documents from the inquest were provided to the Press Association.
