A stabbing in Banbury has led to the police boosting their powers with Section 60 and 34 orders.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray following the stabbing on Hilton Road, near Park Road, around 6.30pm on Thursday (13 August).

The victim was treated at hospital for a stab wound but is now home and recovering.

In response, the orders giving police more control over stop and searches and dispersing crowds were brought in from 8.40pm last night and last for 12 hours.

A review is scheduled for 14th August to see if they need to extend them.

The Section 60 order lets police search anyone in certain areas like Bath Road, Wimborne Avenue, and Woodgreen Avenue if they think there might be serious violence or weapons.

Section 34 means officers can clear areas if people are causing trouble.

If anyone ignores the order or comes back, they could be arrested.

Inspector Langley explained: “We have put these orders in place in Banbury to prevent potential violence following a stabbing earlier today.

“The orders will give our officers extra powers to carry out stop and search activity and disperse people causing a disturbance; they have been enacted for the safety of the public.

“These are emergency powers and the threshold to implement them is very high, however, we are using them to keep our communities safe.

“You will see more police officers in the area while the order is in place, and we expect to carry out more stop and searches than usual.

“If you are stopped by an officer, please do not be worried as this does not mean that you are in trouble.

“If you are in the area and have any concerns, you can speak to any of our officers who will be on patrol throughout this evening and tomorrow.”
