A security alert is underway in North Belfast.

Some houses have been evacuated in the Balholm Drive and Brompton Park area.

A PSNI statement this morning said, ā€œPolice are currently at the scene of a security alert in the Balholm Drive and Brompton Park area of north Belfast this morning, Monday 13th May.ā€

ā€œA number of homes have been evacuated and police are asking members of the public to avoid the area at this time.ā€

Local MLA Gerry Kelly said, "A security alert is causing disruption after a device was found outside in Balholm Drive in Ardoyne."

ā€œI spoke to the police this morning about this incident."

ā€œIt’s understood that a suspect device has been found close to the Crumlin Star club and that police are on the scene."

ā€œThis has caused disruption to residents who are evacuating their homes, with Ardoyne Community Centre opened for them."

ā€œI condemn those responsible for this incident."

ā€œI would urge people to avoid the area while this alert continues.
