Women's Institute in Northants 'yarnbombing' creations for Women's Rugby World Cup
The creations will decorate Northampton town centre from the train station to Franklin's Gardens for August competition.
The Northamptonshire Federation of the Women's Institute will be yarnbombing some of the street furniture in Northampton in honour of the Women's Rugby World Cup.
Within the St James area of Northampton that leads to Franklins Gardens, they'll be knitted players, a rose drape and bunting amongst other creations.
The competition kicks off in August and six of the World Cup matches will be played, at Sixfields including England vs Samoa on Sat August 30.
Christine Carr is Chair of the Northamptonshire County of WI's and says it came about after liaising with England Rugby.
She explains what the 50 WI's groups involved are furiously knitting:
"We're knitting rugby dolls, rugby balls, roses in the colour of World Rugby which is pink, white, black and red, we're doing red roses as they're the WI logo for Northamptonshire and for the county as well."
If you were hoping to spot your favourite player though that might not be happening according to Christine:
"We haven't identified players because we wouldn't want to insult them if they were too accurate, but we have got a rugby doll for every team entered into the competition, so a player knitted in the counties colours for every team playing in the Rugby World Cup."
Christine say the knitters have plans in case of rain but say it should sustain the weather for a few months. They're also are starting to think about where the knitted creations may go after the competition.
"We are thinking that some of the knitting may go out to to the local community to care homes, and possibly Ukraine, but we're happy to take people's thoughts."
Christine tells us she's a rugby fan herself:
"We've been really lucky because we've also taken some stands down to Franklins Gardens at some of the Loughborough Lightening matches, and support the girls. We're hoping obviously they'll get chosen for the England team as well."
If you're not a knitter but want to help out they'll be collections for the cost of wool soon.
It's hoped we'll see the creations in place early August.
