West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) is alerting local residents and businesses about the regulations on bin usage following an increase in unlawful waste disposal into private and residential bins.

Disposing waste in someone else's residential or commercial bin is considered fly tipping, leading to potential fines of £1,000 or prosecution.

Recently, WNC’s Environmental Crime Team responded to increased complaints from residents, particularly in the St David’s area of Northampton, who found their bins unusable due to continual fly tipping.

Since July 2026, four offenders faced fines of £1,000 each for this improper disposal, highlighting the importance of adhering to waste regulations.

Improper use of bins contributes to overflowing waste, negatively impacts the environment, and burdens taxpayers with clean-up costs.

Councillor Andrew Last, Cabinet Member for HR, Corporate and Regulatory Services, expressed the need for bin etiquette: “Local people and businesses may feel they are doing the right thing by disposing of their waste in the nearest bin.

''We’re reminding them that everyone relies on their bins to dispose of their waste so please be courteous of others and only dispose of waste in your own bin.”

Residents are encouraged to use Household Waste Recycling Centres for free disposal or arrange collection through licensed services for larger items, avoiding residential bins for these purposes.

To report fly tipping, residents can utilise the WNC website, the Report It app, or contact the customer service team for further assistance.
