West Northamptonshire has been identified as the UK area with the worst road surfaces, according to recent data analysis.

The study, conducted by Re-flow Field Management, examined Department for Transport road condition data focusing on roads given 'red' status, indicating they require immediate maintenance.

Covering Northampton, Daventry, and Towcester, West Northamptonshire has 83% of roads deemed in need of improvement, with alarming percentages showing serious damage: 5% of A roads and motorways are rated red, and 17.5% of B and C roads are similarly categorised.

To address these issues, West Northamptonshire Council has committed £100 million to capital investment over 2025/26, rising to £155 million across four years.

Of this budget, £14.6 million is earmarked for road maintenance, focusing on micro asphalt applications, surface dressing, and significant repairs.

In contrast, Sunderland boasts the best roads in the UK, with only 1% requiring immediate investigation.

The findings underscore the variability in road maintenance across UK regions, with West Northamptonshire's road conditions notably poor.

Ashley Wing, CMO of Re-flow, remarked, "These results reveal concerning details about the UK's road infrastructure, with stark disparities between regions."
