West Northamptonshire Council disappointed by Government's decision on strategic authority
Government supports BLMK footprint despite regional analysis
The leader of West Northamptonshire Council has expressed disappointment after the Government decided not to pursue a South Midlands Strategic Authority, preferring a Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes (BLMK) footprint.
The decision was communicated by Jim McMahon OBE MP, Minister for Local Government, Devolution and Regional Growth, despite regional support for a larger South Midlands authority.
Analysis by the South Midlands Business Board showed that the proposed six-council South Midlands model meets the Government's population threshold for a strategic authority, covering 1.9 million residents and generating over £60 billion annually.
Supporters argue this model could unlock over £40 million a year in investment capacity, supporting growth, infrastructure, and opportunities for residents and businesses.
Council Leader Mark Arnull voiced his concerns at an Extraordinary Meeting of Milton Keynes City Council, advocating for a South Midlands model that reflects economic realities and regional cooperation.
Despite concerns raised, a motion to further explore a South Midlands Authorities model was defeated by 35 votes to 18.
The decision has raised questions about local support assessment for these proposed models, as the South Midlands approach received backing from Northamptonshire authorities and regional business leaders.
Cllr Arnull stated that West Northamptonshire Council remains committed to engaging with the Government and neighboring authorities to secure the best devolution settlement for the region.
