Man jailed after domestic abuse campaign in Rushden
Mohammed Miah convicted of multiple offences after trial
A 42-year-old man has been jailed for more than four years and issued with a restraining order, after carrying out a campaign of domestic abuse against a woman in Rushden.
Mohammed Miah, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court, to four years and one month in prison. He was also given a five-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the woman except through professional third-party agencies.
The court heard how Miah repeatedly assaulted the woman between 21st April and 14th June this year, including an incident where he strangled her with both hands in front of her children.
In addition to physical assaults, Miah made threats during phone calls, including threatening a serious facial injury to the woman and later threatening violence against her and her family. He also told her he would kill her.
On 13th June, after she ignored his messages, Miah made numerous calls and threatened her again. The next day, he called her more than 50 times before encountering her on the road while she was driving with her children and mother.
After following her to her destination, Miah approached their locked car, verbally abusing and aggressively banging on the door, demanding she let him in. He left the scene shortly after, and Northamptonshire Police officers arrested him nearby. A utility knife was found in his vehicle during the arrest.
Miah faced a series of charges, including controlling and coercive behaviour, stalking involving fear of violence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and possession of a knife in a public place.
PC Steve Lane, from Northamptonshire Police’s Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit, said: "Mohammed Miah’s intolerable behaviour was totally unacceptable, and I would like to praise the courage and strength of this woman.
"I hope this sentence provides her with the chance to rebuild her life without living in fear of Miah and I also hope it sends a strong message to other perpetrators that we will act against anyone who engages in this type of behaviour."
This custody image and details of the case have been released with the support of the survivor.
