Northampton's Queen Eleanor Interchange is set to fully reopen to traffic ahead of the weekend, following the completion of extensive improvement works that promise to enhance the daily commute for thousands of drivers.

Developed by West Northamptonshire Council in partnership with WSP, Kier, and National Highways, the project focused on supporting economic growth, increasing road capacity, and reducing congestion on this vital route.

Significant updates include a full carriageway resurfacing, the widening of the concrete subway, new kerbs, and reinstated grass verges – creating smoother, safer, and longer-lasting roadways.

New traffic signals, additional lanes, and CCTV coverage with the MOVA traffic detection system have been added to improve traffic flows, particularly during peak times. Upgraded pedestrian routes offer improved safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians as well.

Cllr Richard Butler, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said in a statement: "The completion of this project is great news and reflects the Council’s commitment to investing in a modern, reliable network that supports our residents’ current and future transport needs."

The upgrade involved laying 25,000 square meters of new road surface, equivalent to more than four full-sized football pitches. Comprehensive drainage improvements included 450 meters of new pipework, 50 new gullies, and six chambers. Landscape efforts saw over 1,700 cubic meters of material excavated and replaced with seeded topsoil, ahead of planting around 40 new semi-mature trees.

Allan Rigby, General Manager at Kier Infrastructure, has commended the collaborative effort: "All partners involved have worked tirelessly to deliver a scheme that strengthens a critical part of the network."

The interchange will undergo monitoring over the next 12 months, including formal and independent safety audits, to promptly address any potential defects or issues.
