Northamptonshire Police has launched Operation Stormecho in West and South Northamptonshire to address the illegal and anti-social use of e-scooters and off-road bikes.

The operation aims to respond to ongoing community concerns about safety risks and nuisance behaviour associated with these vehicles.

Illegal activities reported include the use of privately owned e-scooters on public roads and footpaths, off-road motorcycles in parks and residential areas, and improper use of rental scooters.

Police officers will conduct high-visibility patrols and take enforcement action, ranging from warnings to potential vehicle seizures.

PC Lee Curtis said: “Operation Stormecho is about working with our communities in West and South Northamptonshire to address behaviour that puts people at risk."

"We recognise the impact that illegal and irresponsible use of these vehicles has on residents, and we are committed to taking a balanced approach through education, engagement, and enforcement. And where necessary, we will take robust action against those who choose to ignore the law," Curtis said.

"As part of this work, a survey will be circulated to residents who are registered with Northamptonshire Talking and I would strongly encourage anyone who receives this to take the time to complete it, as it will help us better understand the issues affecting our communities and allow us to focus our efforts where they are needed most," Curtis added.

Current law prohibits privately owned e-scooters on public roads, pavements, or spaces, limiting their use to private land with permission.

Off-road bikes must follow legal requirements to be used on roads or any public land without authority.

VOI rental scooters are allowed under a government trial but must be used safely and in line with rules.

Operation Stormecho encourages residents to report illegal or dangerous vehicle use by calling 101 or through the Northamptonshire Police website.

For emergencies or immediate safety risks, dial 999.

Police remain committed to reducing anti-social behaviour and ensuring safer neighbourhoods.
