Police launch winter crack down on drink and drug driving
Northamptonshire Police has launched its annual winter campaign targeting drink and drug driving, running throughout December and into the New Year.
The month-long initiative, known as Operation Limit, aims to raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and encourage safer choices during the busy festive period.
As part of the campaign, officers from the Roads Policing and Safer Roads Teams will carry out extra patrols, proactive operations and roadside checks across the county.
These will take place at various times of day, including early mornings, to catch drivers who may still be over the limit after celebrating the night before.
Detective Chief Inspector Shelley Nichols said that even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can affect a driver’s ability, urging people to plan safe transport if they intend to drink.
Last winter, 94 people were charged with drink driving in Northamptonshire, and 39 more were arrested after failing drug tests.
This year’s campaign also focuses on the message that “we all have a choice”, with social media posts highlighting the life-changing consequences of impaired driving.
The Force warns that drivers charged with drink driving during the campaign will again be named on the Police website and social media channels.
Drink and drug driving remains one of the “fatal five” causes of serious collisions.
Police are reminding residents never to drive under the influence, stressing that the only safe limit is none.
