New online service launched for reporting cloned number plates
DVLA partners with police to assist vehicle owners
A new online service has been launched to help drivers report suspected cloned vehicle registration plates.
The platform, available nationwide since 7th October 2026, allows individuals to submit reports directly to the police, ensuring that information is promptly assessed.
This process aims to streamline submissions and improve handling of reports, making it easier for police to track vehicles involved in criminal activity.
Criminals clone number plates by copying legitimate registrations and using them on other vehicles.
Common signs that your plate may have been cloned include receiving penalty notices, speeding tickets, or correspondence about locations you have not visited.
The service, developed in collaboration with the DVLA, is part of efforts to better support victims and strengthen measures to combat vehicle-related crimes.
Drivers who suspect their registration plate has been cloned should report it via the new online service and retain evidence, such as photographs and penalty notices.
It's important to note that reporting does not automatically cancel any fines or penalties, and these should be directly disputed with the issuing organisation.
Furthermore, knowingly providing false information in a report may result in police action, as it constitutes a criminal offence.
