As temperatures increase and outdoor activities become more frequent, Northants 4×4 Response is urging residents to exercise caution while swimming in lakes and rivers. With thousands of miles covered in support journeys, the charity provides essential backup logistics for emergency services across Northamptonshire.

Luke Pell, Vice Chairman of Northants 4×4 Response, highlighted key safety concerns as the weather warms: "The water can be deceptive. Although it may be warm outside, water temperatures remain low and can cause cold shock, leading to difficulties for those swimming."

Formed in 2009 and now boasting over 70 members, Northants 4×4 Response offers all-terrain logistics support in difficult conditions, including adverse weather. As their work extends into water safety, Pell urged locals to prioritise safety and avoid risky behaviors.

"Plan swimming activities for organised events with lifeguards or safety equipment available," Pell advised, adding, "Make sure people know where you’re going and don’t swim alone. Use flotation devices if available, and never put yourself at risk."

The charity emphasises reliance on flotation tools and discourages entering water alone, even for those confident in their swimming abilities. "We stress the importance of calling for help if someone is in trouble and never enter the water yourself," Pell said, highlighting the dangers posed by cold temperatures and swift currents.

For individuals using watercraft, such as paddleboards or kayaks, Northants 4×4 Response urges the use of proper safety equipment, including kite-mark-approved life jackets.

In emergencies, the charity collaborates with local fire, ambulance, and rescue services. Pell reiterated, "In case of difficulty, call 999. Stay calm, lie on your back, and try to float and preserve your energy."
