Police crack down on drink spiking over New Year
Police urge partygoers to stay vigilant and report any signs of drink spiking
Northamptonshire Police are stepping up their response to drink spiking as thousands prepare to welcome the New Year across the county.
Officers have pledged ‘’zero tolerance’’ for offenders, with additional staff deployed in busy nightlife areas to protect partygoers and respond swiftly to any reports. Police say the aim is to ensure everyone can enjoy celebrations safely without fear of being targeted.
As part of the operation, the police will be working closely with venues to raise awareness and provide support for anyone who feels unwell or suspects they’ve been spiked
Detective Chief Inspector Liz Basham is urging people to stay alert, and report concerns immediately if they suspect they’ve been spiked. She said:
“We want people to go out and have fun, but we also want them to feel safe as well.
‘’Look after each other. Don’t leave your drinks unattended. Use licensed taxis but go out and enjoy your night, as you normally would.”
Know the warning signs
DCI Basham explained that symptoms of drink spiking can be severe and should never be ignored. Warning signs include:
- Feeling much more unwell than usual after drinking
- Severe dizziness
- Severe vomiting
- Losing consciousness
- Severe headaches
- Raised heartbeat
If you notice any of these symptoms, DCI Basham recommends getting medical help straight away.
Police are also reminding people that harassment and unwanted attention will not be tolerated.
“If you are out in the town centre enjoying yourself and someone is following you, trying to harass you, touching you inappropriately, please speak to either an officer or a member of staff at the venue because it won’t be tolerated.” DCI Basham added.
What you can do to stay safe:
• Stick with friends and look out for each other
• Never leave drinks unattended
• Use licensed taxis or pre-booked transport
• Report any suspicious behaviour or symptoms immediately
The police say its priority is ensuring everyone can enjoy the celebrations safely and confidently.
