Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to 12 separate fires linked to fireworks during New Year’s Eve and into the early hours of New Year’s Day, causing damage to homes, vehicles, and public spaces across the county.

The first incident was reported before midnight, with 11 more fires breaking out after celebrations began. Investigations suggest some of the fires were caused by fireworks and packaging being carelessly thrown away, while others appear to have been started deliberately.

One of the most serious incidents happened on Landimore Road in Northampton at 12:42am. Fireworks disposed of in bins ignited a blaze that spread to fencing and a car, leaving significant damage before crews brought it under control.

Other incidents included fireworks boxes set alight and abandoned in parks, such as Mill Road in Kettering and Briar Hill Playing Fields in Northampton.

Firefighters say these could have posed a serious risk to anyone nearby.

Neil Sadler, Area Manager for Operational Support said: “These fires have potentially taken resources and crews away from other incidents and people that needed our help.

''They have also caused considerable damage to homes and property that ultimately could have been avoided.

“Fireworks are live explosives that can cause serious harm and damage when used incorrectly, and it is concerning that we have seen incidents where people have set fire to them in a dangerous manner deliberately.''
