Thousands of visitors are expected to head to Kettering today as Northamptonshire Day returns with a packed programme celebrating the county's heritage, culture, communities and businesses.

The annual event, organised jointly by North Northamptonshire Council and West Northamptonshire Council, is taking place across Kettering town centre from 10am until 5pm.

More than 50 organisations are involved in this year's event, with themed zones showcasing everything from local history and arts to food, drink, sport and community organisations.

Visitors can explore a Heritage Zone based around Manor House Gardens and Corn Market Hall, where living history re-enactments, archaeology activities, museum displays and family games are taking place throughout the day.

Speaking ahead of the event, West Northamptonshire Council Leader Cllr Mark Arnull said Northamptonshire Day was an opportunity to showcase the very best the county has to offer.

"We're really proud of Northamptonshire and this event gives us the chance to put our place on show," he said.

"As someone who was born and bred here, I'm proud of where we live and work. People come from far and wide for many different reasons and Northamptonshire Day is our opportunity to showcase the very best of our county in one place."

Highlights include a 17th Century Civil War encampment staged by The Sealed Knot, alongside exhibits and activities from heritage organisations including Delapré Abbey, Northampton Museums and Art Gallery and the Northamptonshire Heritage Forum.

Cllr Mark Arnull added: "Our county has so much to be proud of, from its rich heritage and cultural scene to the businesses, community groups and volunteers who make Northamptonshire such a special place.''
