Police are no longer treating the death of Robert Brown, a 57-year-old man from Northampton, as murder following extensive investigations into the case.

Mr Brown was found fatally injured on 1st August 2025 on a bench along the towpath behind Auctioneers Court in Northampton.

At first, detectives launched a murder investigation due to the nature of the injury he sustained.

However, following forensic analysis and a thorough investigation by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) Major Crime team, it has been concluded that the injury is likely to have been unintentionally self-inflicted.

Three men who were initially arrested in connection with the case have now been released, and no further action will be taken against them.

Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison, who led the investigation, confirmed that all evidence gathered does not support the theory of homicide.

The findings have been shared with Mr Brown’s family, and a file is being prepared for the coroner ahead of an inquest.
