A long‑awaited refurbishment of the children’s play area at Northampton General Hospital is set to begin in April, after new design concepts were officially approved.

The project, jointly funded by the hospital Trust and Northamptonshire Health Charity through its Children’s Play Area Appeal, will see the outdated outdoor space replaced with a calming, accessible area to support young patients during their hospital stay.

The existing garden, located between the Disney and Paddington wards, has been used for years as a vital part of children’s recovery but staff say it has become worn, dated and difficult for some children to reach, particularly wheelchair users who must currently take a lengthy route through hospital corridors.

Alfie Dutfield‑Wright, Head of Fundraising and Community at Northamptonshire Health Charity, said the upgrade will make a big difference for families.

“We know this space plays a really important role,” he said.

“It gives children a secure, safe place to get outdoors, play and interact with the play team, who help them through difficult procedures or moments in their treatment.”

The new design, built around a nature‑discovery theme, will encourage sensory exploration and provide what staff describe as much‑needed escapism for children coping with long or repeated stays, including those being treated for cancer, cystic fibrosis, diabetes and other complex conditions.

“Getting outside and playing is such an important part of childhood,” Dutfield‑Wright said.

“We don’t want hospital stays to take that away from them. For many children and their siblings who often come along too – this space will offer a break from what can feel overwhelming.”

The refurbished area is also expected to support the hospital’s specialist play team, who provide psychological support and distraction therapy during treatment.

“A purpose‑built space will help them support children emotionally and make that journey a little easier.” He added.

Fundraising has reached the level needed for construction to begin, with the charity continuing to work towards a further £82,000 to enhance the space.

Work is expected to be completed in the summer.
